چکیده

Non-invasive epileptic source localization techniques, relying on interictal activity in the EEG and mainly motivated by the need for presurgical localization of the epileptic focus in intractable focal epilepsy, have been widely studied and validated (Blume et al., 2001; Ebersole, 2000; Gavaret et al., 2009; Lantz et al., 2003; Michel et al., 2004; Zumsteg et al., 2005, 2006). Source localization methods most often utilize electric source imaging (ESI), a technique which applies various mathematical algorithms and constraining neurophysiological hypotheses on scalp electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings in order to reconstruct the three dimensional brain electrical activity (reviewed in Michel et al., 2004). Correlation of such modeling with actual intra-cerebral recordings is not always straightforward and some focal deep sources do not seem to have surface representation sufficient for stable modeling (Merlet & Gotman, 2001). Advantage may also be taken of extracranial magnetic fields (MEG) which like scalp electric potentials are due to current density distribution that arises from post-synaptic processes of underlying neuronal populations. The MEG forms the basis for the various versions of low resolution brain electromagnetic tomography (LORETA), which have been advanced to tackle the solution of the inverse problem (the 3D reconstruction of electric neuronal activity based on extracranial measurements) (Pascual-Marqui, 2002).

Combination of Beamforming and Synchronization Methods for Epileptic Source Localization, using Simulated EEG Signals

Localization of sources in patients with focal seizure has recently attracted many attentions. In the severe cases of focal seizure, there is a possibility of doing neurosurgery operation to remove the defected tissue. The prosperity of this heavy operation completely depends on the accuracy of source localization. To increase this accuracy, this paper presents a new weighted beamforming method...

Detection of focal epileptiform events in the EEG by spatio-temporal dipole clustering.

OBJECTIVE Methods for the detection of epileptiform events can be broadly divided into two main categories: temporal detection methods that exploit the EEG's temporal characteristics, and spatial detection methods that base detection on the results of an implicit or explicit source analysis. We describe how the framework of a spatial detection method was extended to improve its performance by i...

Auditory manifestations during focal seizures.

Interictal and particularly ictal surface and invasive recordings allow, in most of cases, the precise localization of the cortical area responsible of ictal discharges. During surface Video-EEG the localization could be a little complicated, considering the presence of artefacts, but the occurrence of a low voltage fast activity or a fl attening, permits, coupling with the onset of clinical sy...

Non-invasive epileptic focus localization using EEG-triggered functional MRI and electromagnetic tomography.

We present a new approach for non-invasive localization of focal epileptogenic discharges in patients considered for surgical treatment. EEG-triggered functional MR imaging (fMRI) and 3D EEG source localization were combined to map the primary electrical source with high spatial resolution. The method is illustrated by the case of a patient with medically intractable frontal lobe epilepsy. EEG ...

Quantitative analysis by renormalized entropy of invasive electroencephalograph recordings in focal epilepsy

Invasive electroencephalograph (EEG) recordings of ten patients suffering from focal epilepsy were analyzed using the method of renormalized entropy. Introduced as a complexity measure for the different regimes of a dynamical system, the feature was tested here for its spatio-temporal behavior in epileptic seizures. In all patients a decrease of renormalized entropy within the ictal phase of se...
